Propane Safety
Propane Safety
Propane is one of the safest ways to power your home or business – but as with any fuel, you need to know how to use it safely.
If you have an gas leak emergency, do not email. Call our office or dial 911.
Here are some safety basics for propane gas:
Detecting a propane gas leak
- Propane producers add a strong, rotten egg smell to propane, which is odorless, to make it easy to detect a leak under most conditions. Teach everyone in your family what that odor means—and what to do if they smell it (see below).
- Corrosion inside your propane tank can absorb some of the odorant, and a cold can hinder your ability to smell its rotten egg odor before it causes problems for you and your family. As a precaution, we recommend that you install propane gas detectors in your home, following manufacturer’s instructions for number and placement. Carbon monoxide detectors are also a safety must. (They’re required in all newly constructed homes.
If you have a propane gas leak…
- Extinguish any open flames (on stoves, etc.) immediately.
- Do not operate any appliance or accessory that can create a spark, including lights, telephones and cell phones.
- Shut the valve on your propane gas tank to cut supply off at the source.
- Leave the house immediately with all family and pets. As you leave the house, do not touch any electrical outlets or light switches.
- Call 911 from a friend’s house at a safe distance from your own.
- Once authorities clear you to return to your home, have your appliances professionally inspected your appliances BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO USE THEM AGAIN!
