Using Your Forklifts Effectively and Efficiently
There’s a lot that propane has a lot to offer your Central or Western New York business. Propane is very versatile, very safe, and very efficient. Using propane as a source of energy also has environmental benefits. That’s why propane is such a popular choice and used in a wide variety of commercial settings.
One of the commercial applications for propane is to power forklifts. Warehouses around the country use propane-powered forklifts. Let’s take a closer look at propane forklifts.
Why Choose Propane Forklifts?
When it comes to forklifts and how to power them, you have a few options to choose from. Forklifts can be powered by diesel, gasoline, electricity, or propane. If you’ve got a choice, there are a number of reasons to make your forklifts propane-powered versus the alternatives. Propane forklifts offer several benefits over their other counterparts.
Propane Forklift Benefits
When you compare propane-powered forklifts to their electric counterparts or forklifts fueled with diesel or gasoline, here’s how they compare.
- Propane forklifts take less time to refuel. That translates into higher productivity for your business because less time spent refueling means more time that can be spent on the job. That should mean higher profits for your company.
- Propane forklifts run cleaner. That translates into your equipment spending less time in the shop and lower maintenance costs. Your equipment should also last longer, so you’ll get more out of each forklift before you have to replace it. All of those things are great for your bottom line and the productivity of your crew.
- Propane forklifts cost less to operate. That’s good for your bottom line. Propane is efficient and cost-effective. That makes propane-powered forklifts a good financial decision. Electric forklifts also cost more upfront than their propane counterparts.
- Propane forklifts produce fewer emissions. Propane-powered forklifts produce significantly fewer emissions than diesel-powered or gas-powered forklifts. That’s good for your business and good for the planet. So you can feel good about using propane for your forklifts and may attract clients because of it.
- Propane forklifts can operate in harsher conditions. Unlike electric forklifts, propane-powered forklifts can be used outside in the rain and in the snow. Electric forklifts aren’t well-suited for the outdoors at all. That’s an important distinction when you have a business in the Buffalo or Rochester area of New York. You want to be able to keep working in the rain and snow. You can’t afford to have equipment that can’t handle harsh weather or that can only be used indoors.

Some FAQs about Gas Bans and How They Affect You
You may have heard in the news that there is a gas ban taking affect in New York City and one proposed for New York State. Let’s take a closer look at that and whether buying a propane stove is a good idea.
Is Propane a Good Idea?
Propane has a lot to offer your Central or Western New York home. Propane is extremely versatile, and efficient. Using propane as a source of energy also has environmental benefits. That’s why propane is such a popular choice and is used in a wide variety of residential and commercial settings.
Propane is also very safe. It has an exceptional safety record thanks in large part to strict government and industry regulations. Propane is non-toxic, so in the rare event of a spill, you don’t have to worry about it causing damage to the nearby organisms, water, or soil. In addition, propane produces minimal emissions.
Will Gas Stoves Be Banned in New York?
You may have heard that in New York City, starting next year, certain types of buildings will have a gas stove ban. In most cases, builders will no longer be able to install any equipment that relies on a fossil fuel in new constructions. What’s more, our governor is an advocate for a similar ban in new constructions throughout New York State as of 2025. She is also an advocate for banning the sale of all heating equipment that burns fossil fuels beginning in 2030. That would include oil and gas boilers and furnaces.
However, the ban on heating equipment does not apply to gas stoves. And there is the chance that newly-constructed restaurants would receive exceptions.
It’s also important to note that any ban enacted would not force residents to remove their existing gas stoves. The rumors that the U.S. government plans to confiscate existing gas stoves from all homes is utterly false. These bans only affect new constructions.
What is the motivation for the (proposed) bans? Concerns about climate change. That’s because it was estimated that a significant percentage of emissions could be attributed to natural gas. Then there was a shift from environmental concerns to health concerns. This was largely due to a recent study that indicated the potential for indoor air pollution hazards with the use of gas stoves.
However, you should know that presently, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is simply seeking to obtain public input on hazards associated with gas stoves. (The CPSC is the government agency that seeks to reduce the risk of injuries and deaths associated with faulty consumer products.)
Are Propane Gas Stoves Safe to Use?
Do you need to worry your gas stove will make you sick? The Propane Education and Research Council (PERC) has argued that different studies have produced different results in terms of the adverse impact to indoor air that different types of stoves produce. They further argue that the sample size of one study (known as the Stanford study) is extremely small. Furthermore, it’s based on unrealistic cooking conditions. In addition, electric stoves are not without their drawbacks. They also produce particulate matter and can emit dangerous chemicals like formaldehyde.
What does this all mean for you? Tucker Perkins, president of PERC, had this to say, “Rather than gas bans, states should focus on natural gas supply chains and mitigate potential hazards…. This, along with proper installation, ventilation, and yearly checkups by qualified technicians constitutes a common-sense approach to addressing health and safety concerns around gas appliances.”

Picture this: it’s a warm, picturesque summer evening and you have invited friends and family over for grilled chicken, hot dogs and hamburgers. You’ve got the food prepped and ready to go so you head to the grill only to discover that your grill’s propane tank needs to be refilled and replaced. But the problem is that you don’t know how to replace it.
Swapping Out A Grill Tank
Don’t let the above scenario happen to you! Here’s a step-by-step guide for replacing your grill propane tank safely.
- Turn off your propane grill.
- Locate the propane cylinder on your grill. Depending on what grill you own, this may be behind a door.
- Find the propane cylinder’s tank valve and the barbecue’s pressure regulator.
- Close the tank valve by turning it clockwise (all the way to the right).
- If you are confident that the tank valve is firmly shut, twist the threaded pressure regular to remove it.
- Take out the tank. This may require loosening some bolts or screws depending on how the tank is attached to your barbecue.
- Place the tank upright (the valve should be on top) in a secure and well-ventilated part of your car. Make sure you close and plug the cylinder valve. You are now ready to transport your tank to your refill station. It should be driven straight there – don’t leave the tank in a hot vehicle for a long period of time.
To reconnect a new propane tank, all you need to do is reverse the above steps. It is important to double check that the tank valve is closed when reconnecting the pressure regular. You will also need to remove the plastic safety cap on the tank valve assembly.
Disposing of your Grill Propane Tank
Getting rid of an old propane tank is not as simple as throwing it in the trash. In fact, doing so is both against the law and dangerous. That’s where Irish Propane comes in.
Irish Propane can properly and carefully dispose of old, used, rusted or damaged propane tanks. We follow all of New York State’s codes for recycling and hazardous waste disposal. Best Practices at Home & Work
Propane has a lot going for it. Whether you use it at home or at work (or both), you probably already know how versatile it is. Propane can do a lot in and around your home or place of business. It can heat water, heat spaces, dry clothes, and much more.
Propane is also very energy efficient. It’s a cost-effective fuel, and that only adds to its popularity.
Finally, propane has a tremendous safety record. As with most things, you should handle propane with care. However, it has a great safety track record thanks to robust regulations. It helps that propane is non-toxic. So in the rare case of a leak, it won’t do any harm to the surrounding soil, water, or animals.
However, if you suspect a propane gas leak, you do need to act. Let’s take a look at what you need to know in order to stay safe with propane at home and at work.
Detecting a Propane Gas Leak
To assist with the detection of a propane leak, propane producers add a strong, rotten egg smell to propane. Otherwise, propane would be odorless. Make sure everyone in your family and workplace knows what that odor means. And make sure they all know what to do in the event of a propane gas leak (see below for instructions).
Your sense of smell isn’t a perfect alarm for a propane gas leak. If there’s corrosion inside your propane tank, it can absorb some of the odorant. Nose congestion from a cold or allergies could also hinder your ability to smell the rotten egg odor before it causes problems for you and your family or coworkers. To be safe, Irish Propane recommends installing propane gas detectors in your home and business. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for how many you need for your size home or business and where to put them.
Carbon monoxide detectors are also a safety must. In fact, they’re required in all newly constructed homes.
What to Do If You Have a Propane Gas Leak
As we mentioned earlier, a propane gas leak is rare. However, in the event there is a propane gas leak in your home or place of business, follow these steps:
- Immediately extinguish any open flames.
- Don’t operate any appliances or accessories that can create a spark. That includes lights, telephones, and cell phones.
- Shut the valve on your propane gas tank to cut supply off at the source.
- Leave your home or place of business immediately. If you’re at home, make sure all pets are brought out of the house as well. As you leave the building, be careful not to touch any electrical outlets or light switches.
- Call 911 from a safe distance.
- Once the authorities clear you to return to your home, have your appliances professionally inspected by a professional before you attempt to use them again.

Propane forklifts aren’t your only option, but they offer a lot of advantages compared to diesel, gasoline, and electric models.
Here are some of the reasons a propane forklift might be a better choice for your business versus the other models:
- Propane forklifts take less time to refuel than the other models, so you and your staff can be more productive.
- Propane forklifts run cleaner than the other models and so require less maintenance. When your equipment spends less time in the shop, you save money and have greater potential for productivity.

That’s something electric forklifts can’t do. With a business in the Buffalo or Rochester area of New York, you need forklifts that can handle harsh weather conditions, especially when winter rolls around again.
What Size Are Propane Tanks for Forklifts?
Propane tanks come in a wide variety of sizes for a variety of applications. The size of propane tank you need depends on how you’re going to use it. There are two common sizes of propane tanks for forklifts:
- Standard: These have a capacity of 2 to 3 gallons. They’re generally used with smaller forklifts like pallet jacks and reach stackers.
- Large Capacity: These have a capacity of 4 to 5 gallons. They’re generally used with larger forklifts like reach stackers and pallet trucks.
Which size is right for your business? The tank size you choose will depend on the type of forklifts your company uses, how often you plan to refill your tanks, and how much fuel you use on a daily basis. Protect Your Family and Employees
As spring continues to bring warmer and warmer weather, and with summer just around the corner, propane is likely to factor more into your life at home and work. You may use it in your backyard to fuel you BBQ, heat you pool or patio, or provide lighting. Perhaps your business uses propane in its forklifts for cost-effective temporary heating or cooking.
However you use propane in your home or business, now is a good time to make sure you’ve got propane safety front of mind. Here are some important propane safety reminders for your home and business. Make sure your family and employees are well-versed in propane safety.
Knowing How to Detect a Gas Leak
Detecting a propane gas leak is actually fairly easy most of the time. In fact, your nose usually knows best. Propane producers add a strong odor to propane (which is naturally odorless). If you smell rotten eggs, it’s time to take quick action. Make sure everyone in your household and business knows what to do if they smell propane. Keep reading for instructions on what to do if there’s a propane gas leak.
There are some cases when the odor added to propane may not be enough to alert you to a leak before it causes problems for those in the vicinity of the leak. Perhaps your sense of smell has been impaired by a cold or Covid-19. Perhaps your propane tank has corroded a bit and the corrosion has absorbed some of the odorant. Maybe everyone is sleeping.
Just as you have smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors strategically placed throughout your home and/or business, you Irish Propane recommends adding propane gas detectors.
Knowing What to Do When There’s a Gas Leak
Now that everyone knows how to detect a propane gas leak, let’s review what to do when there’s a propane gas leak in your home or business.
Whenever you suspect there’s a propane gas leak, take the following steps immediately:
- Extinguish all open flames.
- Do not operate any appliance or accessory that can create a spark. That includes lights, land line telephones, and cell phones.
- Shut the valve on your propane gas tank.
- Leave the house or facility immediately. Make sure no one (not even pets) stay behind. As you leave the home or business facility, be careful not to touch any electrical outlets or light switches.
- Once at a safe distance from your home or business, call 911.
- Wait for authorities to clear you to return to your home or business.
- Have your propane appliances professionally inspected before you use them again.
At Irish Propane, the safety of your family and coworkers is one of our top priorities. Make sure everyone has good propane safety knowledge.

Indoors and Out, Propane Adds Value And Improves Comfort
If you’ve never lived in a propane-fueled home before, you might be surprised to know how versatile it is and how many ways it can be used in your home. Not only can propane provide steady, reliable heat energy at an affordable price, but it also offers exceptional performance and efficiency in a wide range of home appliances at a much lower cost than electricity.
You might also be surprised to learn that propane is a domestically sourced fuel that is one of the cleanest and efficient fuels around.
If you’re looking to enhance your home’s value and improve efficiency, updating or adding propane appliances is a savvy move.
Propane Appliance Options For Your Home
Heating: Propane generates more Btus than an equivalent amount of electricity, so you need much less propane to produce the same amount of heat or energy. Propane is also more efficient than natural gas, delivering twice the heating energy. Propane heating equipment requires less maintenance and lasts longer than heating oil-fueled equipment. And, you have a range of options for propane-fueled supplemental space heating as well as whole-home heating systems.
Water Heaters: Water heating is a big percentage of home energy bills—especially when you consider how much hot water a household uses: bathing, laundry, dishwashing. An energy-efficient propane water heater can help you reduce your energy costs, and perform better too. Tankless water heaters save energy by instantly heating water when you need it, rather than keeping a large tank hot all the time. As a result, you can enjoy virtually unlimited hot water—while seeing savings of up to 40%!
Cooking and Grilling: Nothing beats the precision and control you get cooking with gas. That’s why it’s the first choice of professional chefs in the kitchen—and on the patio. Recent stories about gas stoves and indoor air quality are a bit misleading: While natural gas stoves can potentially emit methane, a potent greenhouse gas, propane contains no methane. And, cooking of any kind creates particulate matter and affects indoor air quality, no matter what fuel is used.
Outdoor Living: Adding safe and efficient propane patio heaters can let you enjoy your outdoor spaces earlier in the spring and later into the autumn. Fire pits and fire bowls are an attractive focal point and gathering space for entertaining friends and family. And propane-fueled pool and spa heaters will warm up the water much faster than an electric heater, and maintain the temperature better once the water is warm. As a result, propane pool heaters help you keep heating costs under control, while letting you enjoy your pool or spa more.
Indoor fireplaces: A propane fireplace brings all the ambiance and warmth of a wood-burning fireplace to any room, without the mess, smoke and ash. And unlike a traditional fireplace, you can install a propane-fueled fireplace just about anywhere: living room, dining room, bedroom, even the kitchen. Imagine the luxe, spa-like glamour of a fireplace in your master bath!
Generators: When storms knock out power, a propane-fueled backup generator will keep your lights on, your refrigerator running and everything else powered up until the utility companies can make repairs. What’s more, a whole house generator can boost your home’s value and get you a lower rate on your homeowner’s insurance.

Fuel, propane cylinders and services for your mobile food business
As the weather warms up, more people in Buffalo, Rochester and other central and western New York cities flock to food trucks for lunch. Whether you’re serving sizzling tacos, loaded gyros, zesty barbecue or some other tasty dish, you need a reliable and affordable fuel source to heat your cooktop.
Propane is a superior option for food trucks. It produces a powerful, even flame that heats food and water quickly. It releases no methane, and its carbon, particulate matter and oxide emissions are vanishingly low. And since propane is almost entirely domestically-produced, its price is more stable than other fuels.
Irish Propane is the premier provider of food truck propane in this region. Here are some considerations when planning your truck’s fuel.
Propane tank sizes and placement for food trucks
By and large, most food trucks use 100-pound propane tanks. These containers offer a suitable balance between saving space and storing enough fuel. Your business’s needs may vary.
There are two principal ways to place propane tanks on a food truck:
- Horizontal placement — In this scenario, the tank goes under the truck in a protective compartment. This protects the tank if there’s a collision, but it can still be struck by large debris on the road. There’s also the concern of access. If you need to change your fuel tank in the middle of the day, it can be cumbersome to do so underneath the truck. This access is particularly worrisome if there is a leak.
- Vertical placement — You can also install tanks upright on the back of the truck (above the bumper to minimize the risk of rupture in a traffic accident). This leaves the tank more exposed, but it has significant advantages. In addition to better accessibility, vertical tanks are typically less expensive than horizontal ones.
Propane safety for food trucks
It’s essential that you get acquainted with the markings on your propane cylinder so you know how it is and when it was last recertified. The Irish Propane team can help you with this.
You also need to make sure your whole team knows important propane safety information, including:
- what propane smells like (rotten eggs).
- where the gas lines on your truck are located.
- whom to contact if there is a propane leak. (You should never try to fix a propane leak yourself.)
Irish Propane is your one-stop food truck fuel provider!
One of the appealing things about cooking with propane is how easy it is to transport, but you need a reliable propane company to ensure you never run out of fuel.
Irish Propane is the top food truck propane company in central and northern New York. We offer the following services:
- Propane tank rentals — We rent high-quality cylinders for food trucks, and you can refill them at our Buffalo or Rochester locations.
- Propane delivery planning — We’ll help you plan how often you need to replenish your fuel.
