Batavia, now the county seat for Genesee County, was founded in 1802 by the Holland Land Company. It was given its name in honor of the Batavian Republic and is the only city in the county. It is surrounded by the Town of Batavia, a separate community.

With the New York State Thruway going through the Town of Bativia, it is easy to get to Rochester, Buffalo, Niagara Falls, other western New York cities and towns, and the Finger Lakes region.

Being near both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, as well as near the rivers that flow into them and the Erie Canal, opportunities abound for water activities like boating, fishing, kayaking, and swimming. Locally, residents can enjoy picnicking, hiking, paddling, and fishing at DeWitt Recreation Area.
